The formula

Equity needed to call = amount to call ÷ (pot + opponent's bet + amount to call)

The bottom of the fraction is the total pot after you call, i.e. everything you could win. The calculator's “pot odds” line shows the same thing another way: (pot + opponent's bet) : amount to call. For example, 3 : 1 means you risk 1 part to win 3, so you need 1 ÷ (3 + 1) = 25% equity.

Once you enter your equity, the calculator shows the EV of calling = equity × pot after your call − amount to call. A positive EV means the call makes money long-term.

Common bet sizes

With 100 in the pot before your opponent bets:

Opponent betsYou callPot oddsEquity needed
1/3 pot334.0 : 119.9%
1/2 pot503 : 125.0%
2/3 pot672.5 : 128.6%
3/4 pot752.3 : 130.0%
Pot1002 : 133.3%
2x pot2001.5 : 140.0%

Remember two numbers: a half-pot bet needs 25%, a pot-sized bet needs 33%. The bigger the bet, the more equity you need.

Worked examples

Example 1: flush draw on the turn, opponent bets half pot

The pot is $40 and your opponent bets $20. You have one card to come (the river) to hit your flush: 9 outs, so your equity is 9 ÷ 46 ≈ 19.6%. Equity needed: 20 ÷ 80 = 25%. Since 19.6% < 25%, on pot odds alone you should fold: the EV of calling is 9/46 × 80 − 20 ≈ −$4.35.

Example 2: facing an all-in on the flop with a flush draw

The pot is $30 and your opponent shoves $30. You have a flush draw. After an all-in both the turn and river are dealt, so 9 outs hit 35.0% of the time (see the outs calculator). Equity needed: 30 ÷ 90 = 33.3%. At 35.0% you're just above it: the EV of calling ≈ 0.35 × 90 − 30 = +$1.50, marginally profitable.

Example 3: bluff-catching on the river

The pot is $100 and your opponent bets the pot, $100. You can only beat a bluff, so you need 33.3% equity: your opponent has to be bluffing at least 1 time in 3 for the call to break even.

Implied odds

In example 1 a straight call loses money, but if your opponent will still pay you on the river when you hit the flush, you need to count that too. The extra amount X you need satisfies: equity × (80 + X) ≥ 20, which gives X ≈ $22. In other words, as long as you win about $22 more on average when you hit, the call breaks even.

Don't overestimate implied odds. When your opponent has a short stack, your draw is obvious (the third suited card lands), or your outs might give your opponent an even better hand, it's hard to get paid after you hit. Also watch out for players behind you who may raise after you call.

Rake pushes the equity you need slightly higher

Natural8 cash games take 5% rake from the pot (capped per stake), so the pot you actually win is a little smaller than the number on the table, which makes marginal calls slightly worse than the calculation shows. The rake caps are in our rake guide. If you don't know your equity, work it out first with the poker odds calculator and enter it in the box above.

FAQ

How do you calculate pot odds?
Equity needed = amount to call ÷ (pot + opponent's bet + your call). For example, with a 100 pot and a 50 bet: 50 ÷ 200 = 25%, and the odds are 150 : 50 = 3 : 1.
How do I compare pot odds with my equity?
If your equity is higher than the equity needed, the call is profitable long-term; if it's lower, it loses money. You can estimate equity from your outs or get it from the odds calculator.
What are implied odds?
Implied odds add the extra money you expect to win from your opponent after you hit. If the current pot odds aren't enough but your opponent is likely to keep paying when you hit, calling can still be profitable.
How do I enter a raise?
Put everything in the middle minus the amount you have to call into “Pot”, and the amount you still need to add into the bet field. For example: pot 50, you bet 10, your opponent raises to 30. There's 90 in the middle and you have to call 20, so enter 70 and 20; the equity needed is 18.2%.
